The short answer

The best progressive reading glasses match their range to how you spend your day. A standard progressive reader reaches from reading power to the horizon, so its corridor is narrow. If most of your day is a phone, a keyboard and a monitor, look for a lens with a shorter range. EV6™ is set for a desk and stops at 6 feet. EV20™ reaches the far side of the room and stops there. For driving, EVinfinity™ is our progressive reader.

Checklist

What to look for

  • A range that matches your day

A standard progressive reader spans everything from reading to the horizon. If most of your day is a phone, a keyboard and a monitor, a lens that stops at the edge of the desk fits it better. If you drive or spend time outdoors, you need one that reaches all the way out.

  • A wide corridor

The corridor is the clear path up the middle of the lens. The farther a lens reaches, the narrower it gets. A lens made for six feet can stay sharp nearly edge to edge. A lens made for the horizon is sharp through a narrower channel. Why progressive lenses have a narrow sweet spot explains the trade.

  • Digitally surfaced lenses

Digital surfacing cuts the exact curves for your power into the lens, accurate to a hundredth of a diopter. It’s the method used for premium prescription lenses.

  • A full stack of coatings

An anti-reflective coating cuts glare from screens and lights. Hydrophobic and oleophobic layers keep water and fingerprints from sticking. A hard coat protects against scratches.

  • A fit to your PD

A progressive lens works best with its corridor centered on your pupil. That takes your pupillary distance, which you can measure at home.

How they’re made

Made to your measurements in California

Digitally surfaced

The curves for your power are cut into a single lens blank by computer-guided equipment, accurate to a hundredth of a diopter.

A full stack of coatings

An anti-reflective layer stops the bounce-back glare. Oleophobic and hydrophobic layers keep fingerprints and water from sticking. A hard coat protects against scratches.

Edged for your frame

A multi-axis edger cuts each lens so the power sits exactly in front of your pupils in the frame you chose. We inspect the lens at every stage. If we find a blemish, we start over with a fresh blank.
