The short answer

For a single-distance pair, a computer screen needs less magnification than a book. If you read at about 20 inches, a monitor 25 to 30 inches away needs about three quarters of your reading power, so someone who reads at +2.00 would use about +1.50 for the monitor. For EV lenses, order your full reading power. The lens holds it at the bottom and eases it down to screen distance as you look up.

By distance

Strength by screen distance

The rule of thumb: double the distance, roughly half the power. These figures assume your reading power is set for about 20 inches and round to the nearest quarter.

Our single-distance reading glasses come in +1.00, +1.50, +2.00 and +2.50; EV lenses come in quarter steps. Starting points, not a prescription. If a power feels wrong, an eye exam will tell you exactly what you need. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests sitting about 25 inches from a screen.

EV lenses

Order your reading power

With EV6™ you don’t choose a computer power. Order the number you’d use to read a book or your phone. That full power sits at the bottom of the lens, where your eyes go for the phone. As you look up toward a monitor two to three feet away, the power eases off, to about half by three feet and about a quarter by six feet.

So one lens holds the phone, the screen and the person across the desk. Which power to order draws the same lens out.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What strength reading glasses do I need for a computer?

For a single-distance pair, about three quarters of your reading power for a monitor at 25 to 30 inches: +1.50 if you read at +2.00. For EV6, order your full reading power.

Why are my reading glasses blurry at the computer?

Reading glasses focus at about 20 inches. A monitor usually sits farther out. A lens with less power, or a multifocal lens such as EV6, brings the screen into focus.

Should computer glasses be weaker than reading glasses?

Single-distance computer glasses, yes. A multifocal lens such as EV6 is ordered at full reading power because the lens itself gets weaker toward the top.

What does +2.00 mean?

It’s the lens power in diopters. A +2.00 lens focuses at about half a meter, roughly 20 inches. Higher numbers focus closer.

Do I need a prescription?

No. You order a reading power from +1.00 to +2.75 in quarter steps, the same way you’d choose a pair of readers. If you already wear prescription glasses, EV6 and EV20™ can be made to your prescription with the Custom Rx option.

What if they aren’t right for me?

You have 30 days from delivery to return them for a full refund, with a prepaid label. Within 60 days we’ll remake the lenses at no charge if the power or measurements need adjusting, or exchange them for a different frame style, color or lens option. Start any of these through the contact form.
