The short answer
We make three American Optical frames as prescription sunglasses: the Original Pilot, a square aviator in 52, 55 and 57; the General, a teardrop aviator in 55 and 58; and the Saratoga, a square wayfarer-style frame in 52 and 54. Each comes with polarized sun lenses surfaced to your prescription in our California lab, single vision or progressive, in Grey or Brown Polarized or with a mirror finish.

Progressive
Progressive American Optical sunglasses
All three frames come with progressive lenses. For driving, sport and quick phone glances, we can design an extra-wide distance zone. Add a note to your order.
Every sun lens on our menu is polarized. Pilots who need to read cockpit screens can ask for non-polarized grey or brown at the same price.

Choose single vision or progressive. Eyeglasses come with clear lenses or our Indoor / Outdoor lens tint option. Sunglasses come with Grey or Brown Polarized lenses.
Add your prescription and PD
Upload a photo of your prescription when you order, or send it afterward from the link we email you. Our team reviews every prescription before we start.
We make them in about two weeks
We digitally surface, coat and edge your lenses in our California lab. Shipping is free and takes about three days.

Frequently asked questions
Which American Optical frames do you make?
The Original Pilot, the General and the Saratoga, as prescription sunglasses.
Can I get non-polarized lenses for flying?
Yes. Order polarized as normal, then reply to the order email asking for non-polarized grey or brown. The price is the same.
Can I get progressive lenses?
Yes, on all three frames, if your prescription has an ADD power.
Do you sell American Optical eyeglasses?
We currently make American Optical frames as prescription sunglasses only.
How long does it take?
About two weeks to make your lenses, counted from when we have your prescription and PD. Shipping is free and takes about three days. Faster shipping can’t shorten production.
What’s your return and remake policy?
Return them within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Within 60 days we’ll remake your lenses at no charge for any reason, or exchange them into a different frame style or color. Scratched lenses are remade once, free, within the first year.
