How EV Readers Work: The Technology Behind Extended Vision

Blog/Technology/How EV Readers Work: The Technology Behind Extended Vision

What Makes EV Readers Different?

If you've ever wondered why traditional reading glasses feel so limiting, it comes down to one thing: they only focus at a single distance. Typically 14–16 inches. Great for a book in your lap. Not so great for everything else.

Extended Vision Readers — EV Readers — take a fundamentally different approach. They use digitally surfaced lenses that provide clear vision across multiple distances, creating a graduated focal range that works the way your eyes actually move through the world.

The Technology: Digitally Surfaced Lenses

Unlike old-school bifocals with their visible lines or standard readers with their one-trick focus, EV lenses are precision-engineered with a smooth gradient. The power shifts gradually from the bottom of the lens (for close-up reading) to the top (for intermediate and distance vision).

This isn't the same as progressive lenses you'd get from an optometrist. EV Readers are designed specifically for the reading-and-beyond range, which means they provide a wider, more comfortable reading zone than progressives. Less head tilting. Less eye strain. More usable lens area where you actually need it.

The Three Types of EV Readers

EV6: Computer & Desk (18″ to 6 feet)

The EV6 is built for modern desk work. Your phone in your hand, your keyboard at arm's length, your monitor a couple feet away, and a colleague across the desk — all in focus without switching glasses.

Like all EV Readers, the EV6 has blue light filtering built into the lens — not a coating, but part of the lens material itself.

EV20: Home & Office (18″ to 20 feet)

The EV20 expands your range significantly. Read your book, check your laptop, and see clearly across the living room or conference table.

Whether you're cooking while following a recipe, watching TV while scrolling your phone, or moving between tasks in an open office, the EV20 keeps everything in the usable range.

EVinfinity: Near & Far (up close to infinity)

The EVinfinity is designed for seeing up close and into the distance, while skipping the middle. Check your phone or sheet music, then look up to see the road ahead or the trail in front of you.

Not designed for laptops or TV — EVinfinity is for drivers, hikers, musicians, and anyone who needs crisp near vision and distance clarity.

EV Readers vs. Traditional Readers

Traditional reading glasses focus at one fixed distance. Pick them up, see your book clearly, look up — everything's a blur. You're constantly putting them on and taking them off.

EV Readers give you that same crisp reading vision at 18 inches, but the focus extends outward. Look up from your book and your friend across the table is still clear. Glance at your computer and it's sharp. You stay in the moment instead of managing your eyewear.

Custom Made, Not Mass-Produced

Every pair of EV Readers is custom made in our California lab to your specific measurements. This isn't a one-size-fits-all product — your lenses are precision-crafted to your pupillary distance and reading power, ensuring the widest possible field of clear vision.

That's why EV Readers cost more than drugstore readers. You're not paying for a brand name — you're paying for lenses that are literally made for your eyes.
